Pup Approved "Rice Krispies" Treats

Soooo this week I posted a Tik Tok making whole food dog friendly Rice Krispies treats without detailing the recipe but since it was such a fun experiment and Opie loved each bite so much it would only be fair to share so you can make it for your pooch too!

Originally, I made the treats with the hope that they would be something fun to share but it turns out, the way homemade marshmallows melt is different from the way store bought marshmallows melt and instead makes the treats a bit…chewier. I.e. this one’s just for the dogs (although I 100% ate at least two because I’m a monster like that).

What’s fun is that they look and smell just like the Rice Krispies of your childhood and your dog won’t know the difference (as long as you don’t tell them). It’s an awesome and unique alternative to celebration cakes and although this recipe is mostly for the dogs, the marshmallows themselves are super gut healing for the humans and delicious to eat on their own or with hot cocoa (just for the humans, no hot cocoa for the dogs).

Alright, so, first things first. We need to make the marshmallows.

I got this recipe from @rily.good and it is just that- really.freaking.good.

INGREDIENTS PART I

1 cup of filtered water divided

½ cup raw honey

¼ cup grass fed bovine gelatin (quality is important here)

1 tbsp vanilla extract

1 pinch of sea salt

INSTRUCTIONS PART I

Pour ½ cup of water into a bowl and add the gelatin. Mix and then let sit to bloom.

Add the other ½ cup of water to a pot with the honey. Whisk to combine and bring to a boil. Boil for 6 minutes.

While this is happening add vanilla and salt to the bloomed gelatin mixture and toss it all into a mixer friendly bowl. When the honey water has finished boiling add that to the gelatin mix and turn the mixer on low. Over the span of 7–8 minutes turn the mixer up higher in 2 minute intervals until the mix is white and fluffy!

Meanwhile while the mixer is doing its thing, line an 8 x 8 pan with parchment paper and dust it with some tapioca or arrowroot starch. When your mix is white and fluffy as previously mentioned, pour it into the lined pan and toss it into the fridge for 1 hour to set.

Once the shmallows are ready, cut them down the middle and remove from the pan. Store half in a tupperware for yourself for a snack and cut the rest up into “mini” marshmallows for the Rice Krispies treats.

INGREDIENTS PART II

2 tbsps grass fed butter

3 cups of Nature’s Path Organic Crispy Rice Cereal OR One Degree Organics Brown Rice Crisp Cereal

INSTRUCTIONS PART II

Put 2 tbsps of grass fed butter into a pan on medium low heat and add the mini marshmallows, let them slowly melt without getting TOO hot and then move off the hob and slowly add in 3 heaping cups of crispy rice cereal. Mix well and then press into the 8 x 8 pan with a spatula so all are evenly spread.

Wait an hour, cut into 12 squares and let your pooch tuck in!

**Although this snack is gluten free and refined sugar free, it still contains grains and unrefined sugars so feed in moderation and only if your dog doesn’t suffer from diabetes or yeast overgrowth/inflammation where we want to avoid grain and sugars at all cost.
